How often do we go through each day not paying much attention to the little things in our lives that would impact us very little but may change another individual's whole life?
I've done alot over th eyears to help various people in need, from the homeless guy one the street to the recovering heroin addict that was the husband of my wife's friend, to the disabled. I am not saying this to brag, rather in remorse.
Let me explain. Helping others directly often is more difficult than it may sound. You often learn more about people than you really want to know. You may find that while they want your help, they resent you for it. They Sometimes they don't really resent you for it, but themselves. The resentment will then get refocused on you in what is commonly called "projection".
This can be very difficult to deal with emotionally.
Also, when attempting to assess when to stop helping someone is difficult. How do you determine when you are no longer beneficial to the person, when they are just using you, or when the cost of helping them is greater than the benefit? These are all difficult issues.
The Jewish sages have indicated that if you have to give to 100 people who falsely claim to need help to save one who really does, then it is worth it.
Nice phylosophy, difficult to impliment. Sure short term is easy enough, but long term - not so much.
Still in the grand scheme of things, I may die tomorrow (YHWH forbid). Is the last act I have on earth to be snubbing someone who may have really needed my help?
I am not trying to answer the question for you as to what you should do. Everyone of us is different and mus come to our own descisions in our own situations. What I am trying to do is give you pause to think. Look back at the day and think. Is there anything you would have done different if you knew you wouldn't be here tomorrow?
